More often than not, most homeowners neglect to monitor or protect the premises of property. They have home security systems in their home to protect the interior but nothing to protect the property itself. Driveway alarms are systems that will notify you when someone (or something) enters your property. Sensors are usually placed at the entrance of your driveway, or other area you want to monitor, and the receivers are usually placed inside your home. When the sensors are triggered, a wireless signal is sent to the receiver and will notify you.
Wireless products have come a long way over the last few years. We have all had experiences with wireless products where the range was not as promised. Newer technology has enabled these products to have the power they need to transmit the wireless signals anywhere from 150ft to several miles, depending on the model. The longer the range you need, the more expensive the driveway alarm will be, as a general rule of thumb.
One of my favorite driveway alarm manufactures is Dakota Alerts. They have three different series of driveway alarm products.
Dakota Alerts Driveway Alarm Series:
- 3000 series: they have a range of up to 650 feet and are available with magnetometer probe sensors and PIR based motion sensors. This series is standard with a plug-in base station or small hand-held rechargeable receiver.
- 2500 series: this is the newest line by Dakota Alerts. With a range of up to 2,500 feet, these products really pack a punch. Also available in magnetometer and PIR sensors, the 2500 is great product where you need a longer range product. As this is the moving forward product for Dakota and they will continue to integrate and develop new products.
- MURS series: these products have a range of up to several miles. Using the license free “Multi Use Radio Service” this system will transmit from sensor to receiver up to several miles. The MURS series is also offered in the magnetometer and PIR versions. Like the 3000 series, this system has a base station receiver as well as a hand-held receiver.
Most driveway alarm receivers will also feature some form of output allow for integration with other security products and devices. For example, the base station 2500 series receivers features 4 “Form C relays” which allow integration with a variety of devices. If zone one is triggered, for example, a security camera can come on to record what triggered the transmitter (sensor).
Our favorite website for driveway alarms is www.security2020.com. If you are looking, they carry a very large selection of driveway sensors and alarms at great prices. They are a good company with great customer service. They are one of the few online companies where you can call and a live person picks up the phone. If you would like to visit the security2020.com website, click here.
Once there, click the menu link labeled “Driveway alarms,” and then the subcategory “Wireless Driveway Alarm Kits.”
